About the initiative

The Future Creatives Initiative invited up-and-coming women Screenwriters to enter their scripts during 2018 for the opportunity to be awarded with the 'Emerging Screenwriter Award 2019'. The winner script will be made into a film by Taival Films, and premiered at MWFF in 2020.

THE STEPS OF THE INITIATIVE

STEP #1

2018 the applicants were asked to write a 5-10 page script for a seven-minute film.

They were to tell a compelling story with a strong heroine that broke the so called 'male gaze'.

STEP #2

Shortlisted entrants were invited to pitch their scripts to our panel of Mentors in February 2019, during the MWFF 2019 season.

Successful entrants had five-minutes to pitch their story.

The three shortlisted entrants, were announced at the MWFF 2019 award ceremony night and were chosen to enter our Screenwriter Mentoring Program.

STEP #3

1 of the 3 mentored Screenwriters was awarded with the 'Emerging Screenwriter Award 2019', and had their script produced into a film to be premiered at
MWFF in 2020.

WHY IS THIS INITIATIVE IMPORTANT?

There are not enough women in key creative roles in the film industry.

According to Screen Australia only 21% of Australian Screenwriters are women.

We know this percentage would be greater if women were more often granted a seat at the table amongst men, as equals.
